Industry Standard: Navigation or Advertisement?
December 3, 1999

The Industry Standard unveiled their latest redesign in early November and right away I thought they had removed one of my favourite pages on the site: an index of all the articles from the current issue on the newsstand. I read the note from Michael Parsons, Industry Standard's Editor in Chief, about the redesign and it didn't mention what happened to the page.

Well today when I asked him why the current articles page was removed, I was surprised when he pointed out that the current issue page was linked in on the front page (and almost every other page on their site).

What's changed at TheStandard.Com?
I had no problem finding the current issue page on the old site, but the problem I see is with the layout of the box on the redesigned site is detached from the rest of the site navigation and is presented like the banner ads on their site. Reinforcing this is the placement of the "Get the Magazine, 4 free issues" button.

Reprise: Update on Industry Standard's Sidebar, January 13, 2000. The Industry Standard did a refresh of their template by seperating the current issue link from the "free issue" link.
