Google's Text-Only Banner Ads
January 19, 2000

Google has recently started to include text-only banner ads on their search engine, but you may have not noticed the change because most searches currently don't include a banner ad along with the search results.

While most search engines have already been selling keyword targeted banner ads to advertisers, Google has responded by not even including any advertising on search queries that don't have a relevant match to what their advertisers are offering.

And the same fast loading pages found before Google had banner ads are maintained by only offering advertisers a text-only template with a powder blue background to describe their site to Google users.

In an October 1999 interview with the New York Times, Sergey Brin co-founder of Google outlined their plans to offer text-only targeted banner ads:

"...Brin says he is talking to other companies about similar agreements. Google is also working toward generating money through advertising, but does not plan to run banner advertisements.

"It's going to be highly targeted text ads that are fast-loading and not a distraction," Brin said. "It will be relevant to searches."

Options for Advertising on Google: Virtual Directory
Along with the "Enhanced Text Links" banner ads, Google is also offering advertisers placement in a new Virtual Directory:

"Google uses its Patent-Pending PageRank Technology and sophisticated query classification to create a "Virtual Directory". In other words, Google categorizes the thousands of different search queries into the Internet's most popular and targeted areas. Advertisers simply select from a wide range of available categories most appropriate to their business. Google will match the appropriate ads to the category most relevant to the user's search."
