SJ Mercury: AOL capitulates, gives up struggle for `open access'.
Dan Gillmor. The cable and phone giants say they won't invest in upgrading their data networks and lines if they can't assert considerable control over what flows up and down those lines. That's their argument against open access. If they prevail we'll end up with only a handful of Internet service providers that will remain at the not-so-tender mercies of the conglomerates that own the data pipes.
